Free Women's Self-Defense Classes

Women's Self-Defense Classes Burlington Our free and comprehensive women’s self-defense program has been running at no-cost to participants since 2010. Our program looks at a variety of topics including, rape and sexual assaults, predicting and identifying abusive partners, dealing with stalkers etc. The program consists of a physical self-defense component as well as a personal safety/self-protection piece. The physical self-defense portion strips down and simplifies certain Krav Maga techniques, so although not being universally applicable, they are much easier to learn and apply e.g., Krav Maga’s blocking system is designed to work against both unarmed and armed attacks, however it takes timing and practice to get the blocking and movement to work. In our women’s program we don’t teach blocking, we teach “covering”, which is less technical and extremely easy to learn but isn’t particularly suitable for dealing with weapon attacks etc. We also teach the use of OC/Pepper Spray and give participants the opportunity to practice with inert units when under a certain amount of pressure. Whilst pepper-spray is a highly effective and legal protection tool, there are a few “tricks” that can help make sure that it hits the target etc.

Our self-protection/personal safety component is an evidentially researched program designed and developed by Head Instructor, Gershon Ben Keren. Gershon holds master’s degrees in psychology and criminology, and has studied in depth, subjects such as victimology, stalking, sexual assaults, and other acts of violence that are perpetrated against women etc. Combining this research with proven and effective security measures by professionals in the security industry, he has designed simple and straightforward methods for identifying, predicting, and avoiding violence. This information is also presented as a free and complete on-line course/program, which can be accessed by clicking here.

The program also makes use of Redman scenario-based training which sees students put under pressure by an instructor in a protective suit. This gives those who attend the program the opportunity to experience some of the psychological, emotional, and physical pressure and difficulties that must be dealt with in real-life violent encounters. It is one thing to practice “techniques” and “solutions” with a compliant partner – which is certainly the first step in training – but quite another to have to deal with an assailant who is resisting you. This type of training is conducted in a safe and non-traumatic manner, and those who take part in this component of the training are able to stop/end a scenario at anytime without pressure from an instructor to continue.

It should be noted that this program is intended to provide training for individuals who are looking to avoid being victimized and is not suitable as a form of therapy for those who are getting over and dealing with acts of violence that have been committed against them.
